Nigeria’s high living costs have caused widespread discontent and frustration among the population, necessitating urgent action to address the rising cost of goods and services.
In the current difficult economic crisis, all Nigerians must adopt a basic lifestyle, even while the government searches for solutions
As a thoughtful Nigerian, I have come to the realization that nothing beats living a simple life. Not only does it provide peace of mind, but it also offers numerous benefits over leading an expensive lifestyle that often comes with temporary glory.
When individuals succumb to the pressures of societal expectations and put themselves in debt to obtain expensive clothes, shoes, and accessories, they are often left with nothing more than a temporary feeling of importance.
However, if one chooses to wear moderately priced items and simple accessories, they can carry themselves with grace and confidence, regardless of their financial status.
Who on Earth has the audacity to look down upon someone who exudes grace and simplicity?
It is unfortunate that some individuals with serious inferiority complexes attempt to compensate by wearing expensive attire, laden with trinkets that even attract the attention of pickpockets and robbers.
Why should we continuously accumulate new clothes and agbadas (traditional Nigerian robes) just to adhere to the practice of buying aso ebi (matching outfits) for every ceremony we attend? The reality is that, with new clothes being obtained regularly, when would we ever find the opportunity to wear all the clothes we have already purchased?
It is disheartening to witness individuals who are financially struggling decked out in expensive attire, spending money like a billionaire when they are celebrating events. Their temporary feeling of grandeur is quickly replaced with worry about how they will repay their debts once the guests have departed. This mindset is not sustainable and only perpetuates a cycle of financial instability.
Moreover, it is concerning to witness the exorbitant amounts of money being spent on weddings nowadays, as if a lavish wedding is the ultimate achievement in life. In the cultures where the white gown wedding tradition originated, such excessive expenditures are not the norm. It would be wise for us to reevaluate our priorities and redirect our hard-earned cash towards more essential aspects of our lives.
Embracing a simple lifestyle is the solution to these ongoing problems. We must all return to the ideals of simplicity in 2024.
Let us celebrate our events within the boundaries of our means, as no one will remember the excess food and drinks the following day. Refuse to participate in expensive ceremonies this year, even if they are willing to offer you credit. Wear your existing clothes and showcase your unique style, as no one will remember the specific dress you wore the next day.
Therefore, let us embrace a stress-free 2024 by avoiding unnecessary financial burdens and the need to satisfy societal expectations that can never be fulfilled. Remember, no one can ever truly satisfy the world.
