Nigerian Lawmaker Shehu Sani has criticized Serie A champions Napoli for their treatment of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.
Senator Sani called their actions a “pure act of racism” after the striker missed a late penalty in a recent game against Bologna.
The incident in question involves a video posted on social media platform TikTok, in which Napoli players were seen mocking Osimhen for his penalty miss.
While the intention behind the video is unclear, Senator Sani believes it to be a racially motivated attack on the player.
In a statement shared on his social media accounts, Senator Sani expressed his disappointment and dissatisfaction with Napoli’s behavior.
He called attention to the fact that black football players in European clubs often face racism unless they consistently perform at a high level.
Napoli, on their part, issued an official statement in response to the incident. They claimed that the TikTok video was meant to be light-hearted banter and apologized if it was interpreted differently.
The Club emphasized that the club has zero tolerance for any form of discrimination or racism.
