Florida has a law prohibiting minors from receiving gender transition treatments, and Republican state lawmakers are moving forward with measures to tighten the limits even more.
The new rule from the Florida Board of Medical, which became effective on Thursday, forbids anybody under the age of 18 from using hormone therapy, puberty blockers, or procedures to treat gender dysphoria.
Children who were already receiving gender-affirming care before Thursday may continue to do so, but the new policy prohibits them from having sex reassignment surgery.
Separately, Republican senators in Florida are presently moving a bill that would make it illegal to give any such gender-affirming care to adolescents and outlaw the use of public funds to pay for the same care for adults.
Gov. Ron DeSantis defended his position ahead of the gender ban’s implementation after Biden said in an interview that Florida’s new law was “almost wicked.”
“It’s horrific what they’re doing,
“I mean, what are they thinking about here? It’s not like a kid wakes up one morning and says,
“You know, I decided I wanted to become a guy,” or “I want to become a woman.”
The President emphasized, “It’s cruel.
Florida’s rule comes after the Board of Medicine and the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine first announced in November that they’d approved the new ban
The board is not opposed to study or treatment for transgender youngsters, Vila continued.
“What the board has sought to do is protect our children from therapies that have irreversible harm,” said the chairman of the Florida Board of Medicine, of the decision.
Those in support argued they are trying to protect children from undertaking gender-affirming treatments that they might later regret as adults.
GOP Senator Lindsey Tichenor stated, “We’re talking about removing healthy bodily parts that you cannot put back on. “I’ve viewed the images. It’s gruesome.”
Tate Reeves, the Republican governor of Mississippi, recently approved legislation that forbids anyone under the age of 18 from undergoing gender-affirming surgery or hormone therapy in the state.
A handful of other states are also approving similar measures.
